Artist's Statement

Richard Zane Ross

Using one’s hands and vision to shape an object into a poetic and emotional representation is an illusive inner drive. I would hope an artist no matter their gender, background, ethnicity or country of origin, should always work to find new limits and then go beyond those into new discoveries. Whether it’s designing sculpture fashion, theatre, music, dance, jewelry etc;  we artists must strive make statements when possible and expand horizons, are own and others, to drive this philosophy even further and to enrich the endeavor of creation, interaction and collaboration to be part of the mix.

Carving stone of various types is not only a poetically visual experience of shapes, colors and unlimited patterns, it is also sensual to the touch; liberating the soul and discovering the mystical form that will emerge.

The intention to carve a raw stone of unidentifiable shape into a finished form is rather straight forward. However not having a preconceived image in mind involves a different approach: reading, feeling, and sensing the stones undefined shape; it’s angles, curves, colors, ragged and roughness, until even a wisp of an image presents itself and lures me toward its own idea of what its meant to be.

When I do work with a preconceived image or form, which is rare, I’m often redirected from my initial instinctive, mental picture, toward something unplanned and find myself engaged in a kind of emotional, creative tug-of-war.

The meaning I find in my art comes home to me when I experience the thrill of the zygote of imagination has been realized in the aesthetic of my work.
